Large wood framed mirrors are a popular feature in home decorating. Correctly positioned a mirror can expand the visual space, lead the eye toward focal points, increase the amount of light in the room and reflect the outdoors, bringing the beauty of the garden into the home. These are all in addition to the aesthetic appearance of the mirror itself. Often large mirrors are also grand mirrors with decorative carving, elaborate beveled edges and fancy cut shapes.

Position door size framed large mirrors opposite the primary entrance to a smaller size room. When possible, position the mirror leaning against the wall so that the mirror reflects the image of a hanging ceiling light fixture, taller walls, ceiling molding treatments or anything which elevates the height of the room. The mirror in this position will suggest a doorway into an additional room when it actually borrows visual space from the room opposite the mirror.

Place large decorative mirrors over substantial focal points in rooms with double height ceilings. Often such great rooms will have a focal point, such as a fireplace, which lends itself to mirror placement above the mantle. The mirror should direct the eye upward so that guests will note the high ceilings and room volume. Mirrors should also be positioned to bounce light around the room. This can be accomplished by positioning a mirror opposite an expanse of windows. A room with lots of natural light will often feel substantially larger because of the light.

When positioning a large mirror on the floor or lower on a wall surface where guests might use the mirror to check their appearance, it is important to accommodate this use of the mirror by incorporating good lighting near or adjacent to the mirror. Best facial lighting is through sconces or tall light fixtures placed on either side of the mirror.

Test the location of your mirror placement several times to determine the best possible views and use of the mirror. A well placed mirror will transform the room and its décor to the next level of elegance.
